APP paper mills awarded as among best exporters in Indonesia
Company cites efforts toward sustainability and poverty alleviation (Jakarta, Indonesia) Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono recently announced the Primaniyarta Awards, which are given to exporters who have made outstanding achievements and contributions to increasing Indonesia’s non-oil and nongas exports. Asia Pulp & Paper’s Indah Kiat Pulp and Paper mill received a Sound Performance award and its Pindo Deli Pulp and Paper mill was recognized with an award for Global Brand Development.
“It is a great honor to receive these awards,” said Aida Greenbury, Director of Sustainability of APP Indonesia. “We take our role in the sustainable development of Indonesia seriously and we are constantly striving to improve our performance while delivering on our responsibility to our stakeholders.”
The Primaniyarta Award is intended to encourage global market excellence for Indonesian companies. In fact, at Indah Kiat, APP’s largest mill in Indonesia, 80% of the energy mix comes from renewable sources. Greenbury added, “With production facilities that are among the most advanced and environmentally efficient in the global pulp and paper industry, APP mills have achieved cleaner production. With this award we will continue working with the Indonesian government in the ongoing and critical effort to develop Indonesian businesses globally and alleviate poverty locally.”
It is estimated that more than 80 million Indonesians live on less than US$1/day, while millions more exist in highly-vulnerable economic and social conditions. APP and its fiber suppliers in Indonesia invested more than US$40 million in social empowerment and support programs, health care, environmental protection, education and disaster relief during 2007.
