APP to increase Brazil paper sales by 10-15% in 2008; shipments amounted to 40,000 tonnes last year

Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) registered paper sales of $40 million in Brazil during last year, a 70% increase from a year-earlier. Shipments totaled 40,000 tonnes of coated and uncoated grades such as C2S, C1S, cast-coated, offset, copy papers, carbonless and cartonboard.

The consolidation of Brazil's paper market as well as APP's office opening in São Paulo helped raise its sales in the period, according to Geraldo Ferreira, APP Brazil's general manager (LAN 5, 2007, p. 4). "We're a strategic supplier of trouble-free paper grades with a large capacity worldwide," he added.

In 2007, APP mainly negotiated coated woodfree, offset, thermal paper, duplex board and triplex board to Latin America. "We've noticed higher demand of value-added products in the country, that's why we're focusing on book paper sales as well as 30% post-consumer recycled," Ferreira commented.

The Brazilian market has kept pace with price indices worldwide. In 2007, coated woodfree prices increased 15% in comparison with the previous year while offset paper prices climbed 25%, Ferreira noted.

Indonesian-based APP plans to increase its Brazilian paper sales by 10-15% this year. High paper demand in China and the US dollar depreciation might incrementally increase paper consumption in other regions, especially Asia, the company said.
